Communications Coordinator

Communications Coordinator

John Filbeck

John Filbeck is Filbeck Picthe Communications Coordinator for First Baptist Church - Bettendorf, and also a broadcaster for radio & TV stations across the state of Oklahoma. He grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, attended Sapulpa Public Schools and was an active member of the school’s band program. He grew up in the Presbyterian Church and was saved at the age of 12 at a youth summer camp. After high school, he went to the University of Oklahoma, majored in journalism, and was a member of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band. He met the girl, who would later become his wife, while playing in the marching band at OU. While in college, he got his first broadcast gig, as a storm chaser for civil defense and a few area stations. From the time he was a child, all John wanted to do for a career was to work at KRMG radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After school, that dream became a reality as he returned to Tulsa, and entered the studio doors of KRMG. During his time at KRMG, John has been a part of every daypart from the drive home to mornings to traffic reporting. From 2001 to 2013 he was also the primary Traffic Reporter for KOTV in Tulsa, and in 2013 he moved up the dial to Fox23 TV in Tulsa to serve as the primary Traffic Reporter for a new station. He continued to keep in touch with his first radio thrill, reporting on severe weather in Oklahoma, as one of KRMG's primary storm chasers the entire time his family lived in Oklahoma.

In 2010, John was asked to serve as deacon in his church, and started to see that God wanted him to serve the Kingdom in a different way than ever before. John’s plans for his career were always in broadcasting. He never considered that God would want him to serve in any official capacity in a church. But it became more and more apparent to him that God had plans for his life that didn’t include just talking on the radio or TV. It was at that point that he started researching and testing his Spiritual Gifts to learn how he could best serve God in the church. He learned that he had the gift of Administration and Giving.  John had been active and on the support staff of his church for years, but this call from God was something different.  So when his church asked him to serve as the Business Administrator of the facility, he accepted without hesitation.  He served in a couple of different positions for nearly 15 years, but was primarily the church's Business Administrator for nearly a decade.

In 2015 John, his wife Cindy, and their daughter Evie moved to Iowa and joined First Baptist Church - Bettendorf. They immediately became active in the church choir, children's ministry, and with the various youth activities. In 2016 John was asked to serve as a volunteer and manage some of the church's business operations.  Then on January 1, 2018, that role became permanent as John accepted a position with First Baptist Church as the church's first Communications Coordinator.

John is an ordained deacon, an award winning broadcaster, a husband, a father, a born again Christian, and has been on numerous mission trips over the years to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  He and Cindy also enjoy playing their instruments in church and other area bands. They are active supporters of area high school bands and The Pride of Oklahoma.  John enjoys playing games with his daughter, working in his yard and gardens at home and serving with children and youth in the church.
